The Great hedge of India படித்தேன்.

<a href="http://www.jeyamohan.in/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/vellai-yanai.jpg"><img src="http://www.jeyamohan.in/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/vellai-yanai.jpg" alt="vellai-yanai" width="1024" height="768" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-74036" /></a>

Dear Mr. Jeyamohan,
Greetings!

This is my first mail to you though I have discussed many times the quality of your creative works with my friend Prof. Bernard Chandra.

I fully agree with whatever you have written about Jeyakanthan as a writer in The Hindu (Tamil) today. As you have said, there is a synthesis of Marxism and Gandhian philosophy. Though it manifested forcefully in his later works, it was always there. Jeyakanthan is one of the writers who do not show a gap between what they write and how they live.

Your assessment of modern Tamil literature is very true. Bharathi’s greatest achievement is his intention to become a poet-prophet. It was natural. Having chosen the pen name “Shelley Thaasan” he acquired the spirit of Shelley. Both were like Prometheus.

I am yet to complete a critical essay on your novel வெள்ளை யானை, though I have presented lectures on the novel in National Seminars in our college and also at Teresian College, Mysore. I analysed the novel from postcolonial perspective. I was happy that you have provided an opportunity to the readers to realize the subjectivity of history. As New Historicists like Stephen Greenblatt and Louis Montrose say, history is cultural and is connected to power.

வெள்ளை யானை establishes that there never was and there never is a single history or a single worldview. When I was reading வெள்ளை யானை, I just thought of Amitav Ghosh’s Sea of Poppies and River of Smoke. While Amitav Ghosh’s novels focus on the Opium Trade, வெள்ளை யானை deals with the predicament of the marginalised people. While Ghosh’s novels have the technique of parallel plots, வெள்ளை யானை becomes more emotional and complex.

Thank you.
